Percy begins the story in a nightmare. Grover had earlier communicated through Percy's dreams. Grover told Percy in this dream that he was trapped in the sea of monsters. A cyclops was trapping him there. Grover says something but Percy can't clarify before he wakes up.
While talking to Annabeth the next day they discuss that Grover could have been talking about the golden fleece that could cure Thalia's poisoned tree. Tantalus ends up sending Clarisse out out find the golden fleece. Percy, upset, heads out to meet Hermes while everyone is sleeping. Percy gets 3 bags worth of stuff. Percy is soon boarding a cruise ship to get going. Annabeth and Tyson soon are following but the security harpies consumed them.
Poseidon sends a helping hand and they all get on the cruise ship. They then learn that Luke owns it. They get caught and find out that Luke is attempting to reform Kronos, titan lord. The group ends up escaping on a lifeboat and they make it to a secret spot that they've used in the past.
Hydra is soon attacking. Clarisse kills it. That's when they start heading out for the sea of monsters. Clarise's boat ends up getting eaten. Percy and Annabeth survive. Tyson is gone though. They end up losing almost everything in the bags. They soon find a spa island that they can port at. Unfortunately Percy's luck continues in a similar fashion as he's transformed into a guinea pig and locked up. Annabeth is able to save him and the a whole crew of other guinea pig people including blackbeard. Blackbeard's ship is used to escape.
They're soon passing the land of Sirens. Annabeth pulls an Odysseus and gets tied to the mast so she can hear the song. She escapes and they nearly get to the island but Percy saves the day. Percy soon learns what the sirens told her she wanted most. She wanted her parents together and look back with the gods.
Annabeth discusses herself being her own worst enemy. They soon make it to Polyphemus. Tyson turns out to be alive. They end up saving Grover with everyone's help. They also get the Fleece back. Clarisse heads back to camp with it.
Luke ends up catching Percy, Grover, Tyson, and Annabeth. He takes them to his ship. Percy sends a message to camp and tricks Luke into confessing to poisoning Thalia's tree. Percy nearly gets killed. Chiron ends up saving the day and being proven innocent. The fleece ends up curing the tree and spitting Thalia out of it. Chiron says it all worked that way to get "another chess piece into play."
